Thrips on Cannabis: Silvery Leaf Damage and Black Specks

Thrips are less notorious than spider mites and, in one respect, harder to eliminate: part of their life cycle happens in the growing medium. Growers treat the leaves, the visible thrips die, and a week later a fresh generation arrives from the pot.
They feed by rasping the leaf surface and drinking what leaks out, which produces damage that looks quite unlike anything else.
Confirming it
- Silvery, bronze, or metallic patches on leaves where the surface layer has been scraped away. The sheen is distinctive — leaves look partly polished.
- Irregular, streaky, smeared damage rather than neat dots.
- Tiny black specks of frass scattered on affected leaves. This is the clincher.
- The insects: slender, elongated, a couple of millimetres, pale yellow to dark brown, fast-moving. Visible without magnification as small slivers that dart when disturbed.

Getting this right matters because thrips and mites want different treatment schedules, and a plan built for the wrong pest fails slowly.
Why they persist
The life cycle runs: eggs laid in leaf tissue, larvae feeding on leaves, then a stage that typically drops into the top layer of medium to pupate, then adults returning to the foliage.
Treat only foliage and you leave the medium stage intact. Treat only the medium and the adults keep laying. Both, repeatedly, is what works.
Treating them
Foliage:
- Contact treatments — insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils — applied with real coverage including leaf undersides.
- Repeat on a schedule over several weeks, because eggs within leaf tissue are protected from contact sprays and hatch after treatment.
- Rotate products rather than relying on one repeatedly.
Medium:
- Let the top layer dry between waterings; it makes pupation less hospitable, exactly as it does for fungus gnats.
- A dry topping layer of sand or grit interferes with the drop-and-pupate stage.
- Beneficial nematodes or predatory soil mites target the medium stage biologically.
Monitoring:
- Blue sticky traps. Thrips are more attracted to blue than yellow. Traps give early warning and, more usefully, a trend — catch rate falling means the cycle is breaking.
In flower: the same caution as any pest treatment. Avoid soaking buds, treat foliage only, stop before harvest, and lean on traps and predators rather than sprays. Wet flower invites bud rot, which is a much worse problem than the thrips.
Environment
Thrips do well in warm conditions, and like most pests they exploit crowded, still, unmonitored canopies. Bringing temperature and humidity to sensible stage targets — see the VPD chart — slows reproduction and makes treatment more effective, without being a treatment on its own.
Prevention
- Quarantine incoming plants and clones, and inspect with a loupe before they join the space.
- Keep sticky traps up permanently. Both blue and yellow; between them you catch most flying pests early.
- Check leaves weekly, including undersides. Every pest on this list is dramatically easier caught early.
- Watch bagged medium, which can arrive carrying pupae.
- Clean between runs. Surviving pupae in old medium or debris re-seed the next cycle.
Realistic expectations
Damaged leaves stay damaged — the silvery patches will not re-green, so judge progress on new growth and trap counts rather than on the leaves already marked.
Expect the process to take several weeks rather than several days. The most common failure is stopping when the plants look better, which is usually right before the medium-stage generation emerges.
- Blue sticky traps — thrips are drawn to blue more than yellow, and traps give an early warning plus a population trend
- Jeweller's loupe or pocket microscope — confirms thrips versus mites in seconds, and they want opposite treatment plans
