Spider Mites on Cannabis: Stippling, Webbing and How to Break the Cycle

Spider mites are the pest most likely to take a grow from "slightly off" to "unsalvageable" while the grower is still deciding what the spots are. They are barely visible, they reproduce fast in warm dry conditions, and — crucially — most treatments do not kill their eggs. That single fact explains nearly every failed mite battle.
Confirming it
The damage pattern is distinctive once you know it:
- Fine, even stippling on the upper leaf surface — many tiny pale dots of similar size, as if the leaf were lightly airbrushed. This is feeding damage where mites have pierced individual cells.
- Undersides and lower leaves first, spreading upward.
- Fine silky webbing across shoot tips and between leaves in established infestations. Webbing means the population is well past early stage.
- Heavily fed-on leaves turn bronze, then dry and die.
Get magnification and look at the undersides. A cheap loupe settles in ten seconds what could otherwise be a week of guessing. You are looking for moving specks, and for tiny round translucent eggs.

Why one treatment never works
Spider mites lay eggs continuously. Most contact treatments — soaps, oils, most sprays — kill mobile mites reasonably well and eggs poorly or not at all.
So the cycle goes: you spray, the visible mites die, the leaves look better for a few days, then the eggs hatch and the population rebuilds from a base you did not touch.
Control requires repetition on a schedule. Treat, then treat again before the newly hatched generation is old enough to lay, and keep going through several rounds. Egg-to-adult development is faster in warm conditions, so warm tents need tighter intervals than cool ones. Stopping the moment the plants look clean is the single most common way growers lose this fight.
Rotating between two treatments with different modes of action is also worth doing — mite populations are well known for developing resistance when a single product is used repeatedly.
Making conditions hostile
Mites do best in warm, dry, still air. Moving the environment against them slows reproduction and makes every treatment more effective:
- Bring temperature down toward the lower end of your comfortable range — see heat stress.
- Raise humidity toward stage-appropriate VPD targets, especially in veg.
- Improve air circulation. Still pockets in dense canopy are where infestations establish.
This is not a treatment on its own, but it materially changes how fast the population can grow while you work through the cycle.
Treating during flower
This is where judgement matters most.
Spraying anything onto developing buds risks two problems: residue you will later smoke, and moisture trapped inside dense flower, which is the exact condition bud rot needs.
Reasonable approach:
- Treat leaves only, avoiding buds as much as practical.
- Apply with lights off or immediately before, and give foliage time to dry with good air movement.
- Stop foliar treatment entirely as harvest approaches.
- On a plant close to finish with a manageable population, riding it out and harvesting on time is often the better call than soaking flowers in anything.
Read the label of whatever you use for its own pre-harvest guidance, and follow it rather than a forum consensus.
Preventing reintroduction
Mites arrive from somewhere — most often on a new plant or clone, on the grower, or from outdoor plants nearby.
- Quarantine new plants away from the main space and inspect undersides with a loupe before they join.
- Change clothes after handling outdoor plants or visiting another grow.
- Clean the space between runs. Mites survive on surfaces and in debris.
- Check weekly with a loupe rather than waiting for visible damage. Early is dramatically easier than late.
Knowing when to cut losses
A heavily webbed, late-flower plant with a mature infestation is often not worth saving. Mites concentrated in dense buds cannot be treated without ruining the flower, and the material will contain mites and webbing regardless.
Harvesting early, or removing the plant entirely to protect the rest of the space, is a legitimate decision — and it is usually better than spending three weeks losing slowly while the infestation spreads to everything else in the tent.
- Jeweller's loupe or pocket microscope — mites are near-invisible to the naked eye and this settles it instantly
- Insecticidal soap or horticultural oil — contact treatments suitable for the leaf-only approach during veg
- Yellow sticky traps — early warning for flying pests and a useful population gauge

Look at the UNDERSIDE of affected leaves with magnification. Spider mites are visible specks that move, usually with fine even stippling of pale dots on the upper leaf surface where they have fed. Fine silky webbing across shoot tips means a well-established infestation.
