Heat Stress in Cannabis: Taco Leaves, Foxtails and What to Fix First

Heat stress announces itself with a shape: leaf edges curling upward into a taco or canoe. It is worth understanding that this is the plant working, not the plant damaged. Curling reduces exposed surface area, which slows transpiration when the plant is losing water faster than its roots can replace it.
Because it is a defence rather than an injury, mild heat stress reverses quickly once conditions improve — often within hours.
Identifying it
- Leaf edges curl upward; the leaf takes on a canoe or taco profile.
- Top canopy first, closest to the lamp, tapering lower down.
- Worsens through the light period and eases overnight.
- Sometimes accompanied by yellowing or dry patches on the most exposed leaves.
- In flower, prolonged heat can produce foxtailing — new spear-like growth pushing out of already-formed buds, which fractures bud structure and generally reduces quality.

Temperature is only half the answer
Raw temperature is a poor standalone target because the stress a plant experiences depends on how much moisture the air can still absorb. That combined measure is VPD, and it is the number worth managing.
28°C at 65% RH and 28°C at 30% RH are completely different environments for a plant. The first is comfortable; the second pulls water out of the leaves faster than most root systems can supply.
Practical targets, consistent with our VPD chart:

As a rough working range, most growers aim for something in the region of 20–28°C (68–82°F) with lights on, and start seeing trouble past about 30°C (86°F) — but check VPD before concluding you have a temperature problem at all. Raising humidity is often easier and cheaper than lowering temperature, and it moves VPD in the same direction.
Measure it properly
The most common mistake here is trusting the wrong reading. A sensor clipped to a tent pole in the shade can be several degrees cooler than the canopy under the lamp.
- Put the sensor at canopy height, in the light, where the plant actually is.
- Check it at the hottest point of the light period, not when you happen to walk past.
- If you run several plants, check the centre and the edges — they are rarely the same.
Fixing it, cheapest first
1. Move air across the canopy. A single oscillating clip fan aimed to gently rustle the tops does more than its cost suggests, breaking up the still boundary layer of hot humid air sitting on each leaf.
2. Increase extraction. If your inline fan is running at a fraction of its speed, the tent is holding air it should be exchanging. This is usually the real fix.
3. Raise or dim the light. Lamps are the heat source. Dimming reduces both heat and intensity — often desirable together, and see light burn if the top leaves are also bleaching.
4. Shift the light cycle. Running lights overnight moves the heaviest heat load to the coolest ambient hours. Costs nothing and can be decisive in summer.
5. Raise humidity rather than lowering temperature. If VPD is high because the air is dry, a humidifier is far cheaper than cooling, and gets you to the same place.
6. Air conditioning — the real answer when ambient temperature is the limit, and the only one that reliably works in a hot room.
What heat actually costs
- Growth rate. Photosynthesis has a temperature optimum and falls away past it, so a hot tent grows more slowly even when nothing looks wrong.
- Aroma. Terpenes are volatile. Sustained heat in late flower is widely associated with losing the smell you spent months building.
- Bud structure. Foxtailing in high heat produces loose, awkward buds.
- Humidity risk. Hot air holds more moisture; when lights go off and temperature drops, relative humidity spikes — which is precisely the condition bud rot needs.
That last point catches people out. A tent that is fine at 30°C during the day can hit dangerous humidity within an hour of lights-off.
Confirming the fix
Mild heat stress recovers fast. Leaves should relax and flatten within hours to a day of conditions coming back into range — and that fast reversal is itself confirmation you diagnosed correctly.
If the taco shape persists after temperature and VPD are both in range for a couple of days, look again at watering and root health. A plant that cannot move water will show the same defensive curl for entirely different reasons.
- Thermometer + hygrometer — you cannot manage what you are not measuring, and clip-on tent readings are often wrong by several degrees
- Clip-on oscillating fan — moving air across the canopy is the cheapest single degree you will ever buy
- Inline duct fan with speed controller — the actual fix when passive airflow is not enough
