When to harvest: read the trichomes
Breeder flowering times are marketing averages. The plant tells you itself — with a $15 loupe (60–100×) on the BUD trichomes (sugar-leaf trichomes mature early and lie).

Autoflowers: same rules, but check earlier and more often — autos can move from cloudy to amber in days. Pistil color (white → orange) is a rough pre-check, not a harvest signal.
Where this comes from, honestly. Two of these things are measured and one isn't. Cannabinoid concentration really does rise to a peak and then fall as the plant matures, and trichomes really do mature asynchronously — so any single bract carries a mix of stages, which is why one bad look through a loupe misleads you. But the specific trichome-colour percentages are grower convention, not laboratory findings: no peer-reviewed study we could find ties "20% amber" to a cannabinoid number. And the common claim that amber means THC has turned to CBN on the plant does not hold up — CBN accumulation is documented as a post-harvest oxidation process during drying and storage, not something you wait for on a living plant. Use colour as a practical readiness cue, which is what it's good for.

When is the right time to harvest?
Judge trichomes, not the breeder's week count. Mostly cloudy is the common target for a clear effect; some amber is the usual signal for a heavier one. Cannabinoid concentration is measured to rise to a peak and then decline as the plant senesces, so later is not automatically stronger.
Does amber mean THC has turned to CBN?
No — and this is widely repeated but unsupported. CBN accumulation is documented as a post-harvest oxidation process during drying and storage, not something that happens on the living plant. Trichome colour is a useful readiness cue; the CBN mechanism behind it is folklore.
What magnification do I need?
Enough to resolve individual trichome heads — a 60x loupe or a cheap USB microscope. Phone cameras alone usually cannot separate cloudy from clear reliably.
Why do trichomes look different across one bud?
Because they mature asynchronously. Research sampling bracts through flowering found mixed maturity stages on the same bract, which is exactly why a single look through a loupe misleads.
