Seedlings Not Growing: Why Week Two Stalls

Stalled seedlings frustrate growers because the instinct that fixes most plant problems — do more — is precisely what causes this one. A seedling has a root system a few centimetres across and almost no nutrient demand. Treating it like a small version of a mature plant overwhelms it.
In roughly that order, check: water, nutrients, light, pot size, temperature.
First: is it actually stalled?
The first week or so after emergence looks slow from above because the plant is building roots rather than leaves. Little visible top growth in week one is normal and not a problem.
By around the end of week two you should see real change — true leaves developing, the plant visibly larger week over week. If nothing is moving by then, work through the list.
1. Overwatering — the most common cause
A seedling's roots occupy a tiny volume. Watering the whole pot leaves the rest of the medium saturated with nothing drinking from it, and it stays saturated for days. The roots sit in airless medium and stop developing.
What to do: water a small area immediately around the stem, not the whole pot. Then wait until the surface is genuinely dry before doing it again. Widen the watered area as the plant grows.

2. Feeding too early
Seeds carry their own reserves, and a lightly amended medium usually holds enough for the first couple of weeks. Nutrients added on top of that produce a salt concentration a tiny root system cannot cope with.
What to do: plain pH-corrected water until the first true leaves are established and the plant is visibly growing. Then start well below label strength and increase only in response to what the plant does.

3. Too much light
Modern fixtures at full output are far beyond what a seedling can use. The result is bleaching and stalling, sometimes without any obvious burn.
What to do: target roughly 200–400 PPFD, consistent with our light schedules guide. Dim the fixture or raise it. Increase intensity as the plant grows rather than starting at maximum. If upper leaves are pale or whitening, read light burn.
4. Pot size
A seedling in a large pot is a watering problem waiting to happen: the volume of medium it cannot reach stays wet indefinitely.
What to do: start small and pot up, or if starting in the final pot — sensible for autoflowers, which dislike transplanting — water only a small zone around the stem and expand it outward as roots develop.
5. Temperature and humidity
Seedlings want gentler conditions than the rest of the tent: warmer, more humid, lower VPD. Our VPD chart puts the seedling band at roughly 0.5–0.8 kPa, which is meaningfully softer than veg.
A propagator or humidity dome does this cheaply, because a seedling has no root system to buffer a swinging environment.
Less common causes worth knowing
Fungus gnat larvae. Almost harmless to mature plants, genuinely destructive to seedlings, because a seedling's root system is exactly the fine root hair material the larvae eat. Small flies around the medium plus a stalled seedling is a strong combination — see fungus gnats.
Damping off. The stem thins, darkens and collapses at the medium line, and the seedling falls over. A fungal problem driven by excessive moisture and poor airflow. Usually fatal once visible; prevention is drier surface medium and gentle air movement.
pH out of range. Less common this early but possible, especially in coco or with unusual tap water. See nutrient lockout.
Damaged taproot. From rough handling at transplant, or a seed helped out of its shell. Nothing to be done except patience; some recover, some do not.
Genetics. Occasionally a seed is simply weak. If everything else checks out and siblings in identical conditions are thriving, this is a real possibility and not worth weeks of intervention.
The general principle
Nearly every seedling problem is caused by generosity. Less water, no nutrients, less light, smaller pot, stable warm humid air — and then patience while the root system builds. A seedling that looks like it is doing nothing is often doing the most important work of its life underground.

Why is my seedling not growing?
Most often overwatering, over-feeding, or too much light. Seedlings have tiny root systems and almost no nutrient demand, so the care that suits a mature plant actively harms them. A stalled seedling is usually receiving too much of something rather than too little.
Should I feed seedlings nutrients?
Generally not for the first couple of weeks. Seed reserves plus whatever is in a lightly amended medium is normally enough until the first true leaves are established. Feeding early is one of the most common causes of stalled seedlings.
How much light does a seedling need?
Far less than a mature plant — roughly 200-400 PPFD. Seedlings placed under full flower-strength light bleach and stall, and raising or dimming the fixture is often the entire fix.
How often should I water a seedling?
Much less often than feels right. A seedling in a large pot sits in medium it cannot drink through, which suffocates the few roots it has. Water a small area around the stem, then wait until the surface is genuinely dry.
How long should a seedling take to show real growth?
The first week is mostly root development with little visible top growth, which is normal. If there is no meaningful new growth by around the end of week two, something in the environment or the care routine is holding it back.
