Powdery Mildew on Cannabis: White Dust That Wipes Off

Powdery mildew is the most recognisable pathogen in growing and the most commonly underestimated. It looks minor — a little white dust on a leaf — and it behaves like an infestation, spreading across a canopy in days and persisting in a space for months.
The distinguishing feature is that it grows on the surface rather than inside the tissue. That is why it wipes off, and why early leaf-stage PM is genuinely manageable while PM in flower is not.
Confirming it
- Circular white or pale grey powdery patches, most often on upper leaf surfaces, looking like a light dusting of flour.
- It wipes off with a finger, leaving apparently clean tissue behind. This is the fastest confirmation available and distinguishes PM from nearly everything else.
- Patches spread outward and merge; badly affected leaves yellow and die.
- In advanced cases it reaches stems and buds.
Two things it is confused with:
- Trichomes. Crystalline, concentrated on and around flower, and do not smear away.
- Residue from a foliar spray or hard water. Uniform rather than in defined circular colonies.
What it needs
PM is unusual: it does not require wet leaves. High humidity and still air are sufficient, and it does well at ordinary tent temperatures. That combination is why it appears in grows where nothing looks obviously wrong.
The three conditions that matter:
- High relative humidity, particularly the overnight peak after lights-off, when temperature drops and RH climbs.
- Still air, especially inside a dense canopy where fans move air over the top but not through it.
- Crowding — plants touching, no space for air to pass between them.
Genetics matter too. Some cultivars are markedly more susceptible, and if PM recurs on the same plant while its neighbours stay clean, that is worth knowing for future runs.
Fixing conditions first
Any treatment applied without changing the environment buys time and nothing more.
- Bring humidity down, watching the min/max overnight figure rather than the daytime reading. See bud rot for why the lights-off spike is the number that matters.
- Move air through the canopy, not just across the top. Oscillating fans at canopy level and below.
- Space plants apart. Leaves touching leaves is a transmission route and a still-air pocket.
- Defoliate selectively to open the interior of dense plants.
- Remove badly affected leaves and take them out of the room rather than dropping them on the floor.
Treating it
In veg, contact treatments are reasonable and generally effective on early infections. Potassium bicarbonate based products are a common choice, as are various horticultural oils. Coverage matters — undersides and interior leaves too, not just the obvious patches — and repeat applications are usually required because spores persist.
In flower, be very cautious. Spraying onto developing buds risks residue and traps moisture inside dense flower, which invites bud rot — trading one mould for a worse one. Prefer removing affected leaves, fixing airflow and humidity aggressively, and accepting that you are managing rather than curing until harvest.
On buds, there is no salvage. Affected flower should be discarded. Inhaling mould is a genuine health risk and drying does not make it safe.
Whatever you use, follow the product's own pre-harvest guidance rather than forum consensus.
Clearing the space afterwards
PM spores persist on surfaces, in fabric, and in debris. If it has been through your space once, assume it is still there.
- Strip and clean the tent between runs — walls, poles, trays, fans.
- Wash or replace fabric pots.
- Clean fan blades and filters; they redistribute spores efficiently.
- Quarantine and inspect incoming clones, which are a common reintroduction route.
The realistic expectation
Growers who deal with PM once often deal with it repeatedly, because the underlying environment has not changed and the spores are already resident. The permanent fix is not a product. It is a tent that runs with real air movement through the canopy and humidity that does not spike overnight — plus knowing which of your cultivars is prone to it.
- Thermometer + hygrometer with min/max memory — PM tracks humidity, and the overnight peak is the number that matters
- Clip-on oscillating fan — still air in dense canopy is the condition PM needs most
- Potassium bicarbonate fungicide — a common contact option for veg-stage leaf treatment

What does powdery mildew look like on cannabis?

Is powdery mildew the same as trichomes or spilled dust?

What humidity causes powdery mildew?
Unusually among fungal problems, it does not need wet leaves — high humidity and still air are enough, and it does well in the moderate temperatures a grow tent runs at. Poor circulation and dense canopy matter as much as the humidity number.
Can I smoke buds that had powdery mildew?
Buds with visible mildew should not be smoked. Inhaling mould is a real health risk and drying does not neutralise it. Leaves with light early PM can be removed and the plant continued, but affected flower should be discarded.
Does powdery mildew come back after treatment?
Frequently, because spores persist in the space and the conditions that allowed it usually have not changed. Treating the leaves without fixing airflow and humidity buys weeks, not a cure.
