Automatic VPD Monitoring: Which Sensors Work and What They Cost

The VPD chart gives you a target. It cannot tell you whether you were inside it at three in the morning, and that is where most VPD problems actually live.
VPD is not a setting. It moves continuously — climbing through the light period as the lamp warms the canopy, then swinging sharply in the hour after lights-off when temperature falls and relative humidity spikes. A grower checking a hygrometer when they walk past sees a handful of samples a day, all taken while they happened to be in the room, all during lights-on. The overnight hours are invisible, and that is when bud rot gets its opening.
What you actually need
VPD is derived from temperature and relative humidity. There is no such thing as a "VPD sensor" — anything that measures those two accurately gives you the inputs.

The jump that matters is from the second row to the third. Once readings are captured without you, you stop sampling your tent and start measuring it.
Placement beats precision
Before buying anything more accurate, put what you have in the right place. A sensor in the wrong spot produces confidently wrong numbers.
- Canopy height, where the plants are — not on the floor, not at the top of the tent.
- Shaded from direct lamp light. A sensor baking under an LED reads the lamp, not the air.
- Away from the humidifier's output and away from the intake. Both create local microclimates that are not representative.
- Away from the tent wall, which tracks room temperature more than tent temperature.
Moving a sensor from a corner pole to mid-canopy commonly changes the reading by several degrees and several percent RH — which, given VPD is non-linear in both, can be the whole difference between "in band" and "not".
Cloud versus local
Cloud sensors — Govee, SwitchBot, AC Infinity, Ecowitt — pair to an app, sync on their own, and let you check the tent from anywhere. Setup is minutes. The trade-off is dependence on the manufacturer's account and servers, and a privacy consideration worth thinking about in this particular hobby.
Local sensors — Inkbird over Bluetooth, or anything exposed through Home Assistant — keep readings inside your house and keep working when someone else's cloud goes down. More setup, more control.
Neither is wrong. If you already run Home Assistant, use it; it will bridge nearly anything, including brands with no usable API of their own. If you do not, a cloud sensor is the shortest path from nothing to hourly data.
Turning readings into decisions
Logged numbers are not the point. The point is knowing whether the numbers were right for the stage the plant is in — and that is where a raw sensor app stops being useful.
A VPD of 1.3 kPa is good in flower and too aggressive for a seedling. An app that draws a line chart cannot tell you which of those you are looking at, because it does not know your plant's stage. That comparison is the work, and it is what a grow journal adds on top of the sensor:
- readings arriving on their own, hourly, including overnight
- VPD derived from every reading, not calculated by hand
- graded against the band for the current stage, so "in range" is measured rather than judged
- drift flagged when the combination moves out — the case where temperature and humidity each look fine individually
- optionally, plugs that act on it: "RH over 65% in flower → exhaust fan ON", running whether or not you are awake
That last one closes the loop. Everything before it tells you something is wrong; that one fixes it at 3am.
What this costs

If you are choosing between spending more on a fancier sensor or spending nothing on making an ordinary one automatic, the second is almost always the better trade. Accuracy to a tenth of a degree changes nothing about a grow. Knowing what happened overnight changes quite a lot.

Do I need a special VPD sensor?
No. VPD is calculated from temperature and relative humidity, so any accurate hygrometer gives you the inputs. What differs between products is whether the readings are logged automatically and whether something does the calculation for you — a bare hygrometer means reading a screen and doing the maths yourself.
What is the cheapest way to monitor VPD automatically?

Where should I put the sensor in my grow tent?

How often should VPD be logged?
Hourly is enough to see the shape of a day and catch the lights-off humidity spike. What matters more than frequency is that it happens without you: the readings you miss are the ones taken while you are asleep or at work, which is exactly when the problems start.
