Reeferman really caught lightning in a bottle with Willie Nelson. Taking home Best Sativa at the 2005 High Times Cannabis Cup, this pure F1 landrace hybrid is a cross between Vietnamese Black and Highland Nepalese. The lore behind it is just as legendary as the genetics. Story goes that Reeferman tossed some of the harvest to Willie Nelson himself, and the country icon loved it so much he bought out the entire crop. That alone cemented its status in the culture, but the weed actually lived up to the hype.

Growing it, however, wasn't for the faint of heart. This plant was a wild, untamed sativa that grew with ridiculous vigor. Indoor growers had to flip to flower almost immediately or risk the plant blowing through the roof of their tent. Outdoors, it needed a massive season to finish, commonly taking anywhere from 10 to 14 weeks in flower. If you look at old threads on ICMag or Overgrow, you'll see a lot of guys complaining about the never-ending flowering cycle. But the ones who had the patience to take it to the finish line were rewarded with something truly special.

The smoke was absolute top-tier daytime head stash. It delivered a soaring, clear-headed, and intensely euphoric high that got your creative juices flowing without any anxiety or crash. The terpene profile was a unique blend of sweet and sour lemongrass mixed with spicy, herbal undertones. Sadly, with Reeferman's operations bouncing around over the years, finding authentic, original 2005-era stock is nearly impossible today. A lot of the seeds floating around later were F2s or outcrosses, leaving the original cup-winning Willie Nelson as a nostalgic white whale for landrace sativa hunters.

Growing Willie Nelson: what to expect

As a sativa-leaning plant, plan for a big stretch after the flip (often 100–200%) — flip earlier than feels natural and keep training options ready. Sativa-leaning plants also generally prefer a lighter feed than heavy indicas. Growers familiar with Vietnamese Black or Nepalese will recognize much of its behavior. Whatever the listing says, the cut in YOUR tent is the ground truth: log feedings, readings, and photos, and let the trends — not the label — drive decisions.
