Santa Maria is one of those legendary cuts with a backstory that sounds almost too wild to be true. Originally sourced from a Brazilian Amazonian landrace used in spiritual ceremonies, the clone was brought to the Netherlands by Highlife magazine editor Bernt Gundersen. Out of respect for its sacred origins, the crew at No Mercy Supply initially dubbed it 'Planck'. But the coffeeshop scene couldn't get enough of it, and the name Santa Maria stuck. It quickly became famous for delivering a wildly euphoric, soaring high that old-school heads often described as downright 'erotic'.

To get it into seed form, No Mercy Supply put in some serious work. They crossed the original clone with Mexican Haze and Silver Pearl, then backcrossed it to the pure mother up to the F8 generation. The result is a mostly Sativa hybrid (about 75%) that behaves surprisingly well in the garden. Unlike most wispy, long-flowering landraces, Santa Maria finishes fast, usually wrapping up in just 8 to 9 weeks. It drops sweet, floral buds that reek of incense and heavy exotic funk.

Beyond the coffeeshop hype, Santa Maria's biggest claim to fame might actually be its role in modern breeding. It was the crucial 'missing link' used to create Lowryder 2, proving that you could breed stable, potent autoflowers without losing flavor or yield. Finding the pure, regular seeds of No Mercy’s line today is a real hunt, but anyone lucky enough to run Santa Maria knows exactly why this Brazilian legend commands so much respect.

Growing Santa Maria: what to expect

As a sativa-leaning plant, plan for a big stretch after the flip (often 100–200%) — flip earlier than feels natural and keep training options ready. Sativa-leaning plants also generally prefer a lighter feed than heavy indicas. Growers familiar with Santa Maria or Santa Maria F1-X will recognize much of its behavior. Whatever the listing says, the cut in YOUR tent is the ground truth: log feedings, readings, and photos, and let the trends — not the label — drive decisions.
