You really can't talk about the foundation of modern cannabis without giving massive respect to DJ Short, and Flo is arguably his masterpiece right alongside Blueberry. Bred back in the 90s, DJ took a Purple Thai female—which was a wild landrace cross of Chocolate Thai and Highland Oaxaca Gold—and dusted it with his legendary Afghani Indica male. The result took the number one spot at the '96 Cannabis Cup. Flo wasn't bred to knock you out; it was specifically designed to induce a "flow state." It's one of those rare, old-school sativa-dominant hybrids that actually finishes fast and doesn't stretch to the ceiling.

Growing DJ Short's Flo is a rite of passage. Over on the forums, old heads will tell you straight up that these vintage genetics can be a little finicky. Germination rates on original stock can be all over the place, and mutations aren't uncommon, so you have to pop the whole pack and hunt for a mother. But once you find that keeper, she's magical. She usually throws medium-tall, spear-shaped colas with small, densely packed calyxes that put on a crazy display of dark greens, blues, and purples. And unlike pure sativas, she keeps her stretch totally manageable indoors and finishes fast. She might not dump weight like commercial cash crops, but the quality of the resin is undeniable.

The terpene profile on Flo is something you just don't see anymore. It's a complex, hash-forward floral aroma with heavy notes of rose, geranium, and spicy pine, sometimes carrying a subtle, musky citrus undertone. The smoke is incredibly light and smooth, and the high is where she really shines. It's entirely functional, uplifting, and clear-headed. You can smoke a joint of Flo with your morning coffee and go build a deck or write a book. It just puts a positive, anxiety-free spin on the day without any of the heavy, dragging stone that modern polyhybrids leave behind.

Growing Flo: what to expect

As an indica-leaning plant, expect a modest stretch after the flip (roughly 50–100%) and dense bud structure — which makes late-flower humidity discipline the main risk: keep RH in the 40s once buds fatten to stay ahead of mold. Growers familiar with Floral Line or Floral Line will recognize much of its behavior. Whatever the listing says, the cut in YOUR tent is the ground truth: log feedings, readings, and photos, and let the trends — not the label — drive decisions.
