If you want to talk about true, unadulterated hash plant genetics, you have to talk about Tom Hill's Deep Chunk. This line is a pure Afghani landrace that was brought over from the Hindu Kush region way back in the 1970s. Tom spent over two decades growing it out in Northern California, carefully inbreeding and selecting for potency and resin production while completely ignoring commercial yields. Because of his obsessive preservation work, Deep Chunk became a true Inbred Line (IBL), making it one of the most stable and heavily utilized breeding tools in cannabis history.

In the garden, this plant is built like a tank. It stays incredibly short and stocky, with thick, tree-trunk stems and almost non-existent internodal spacing. Honestly, she can be a painfully slow grower in the vegetative stage, but once you flip to flower, she explodes into action and finishes in a rapid 7 to 8 weeks. The buds form into rock-hard, golf-ball-sized nuggets that are absolutely caked in trichomes. Because those colas get so dense, you have to keep your humidity dialed in perfectly during late flower, or you are almost guaranteed to lose your top buds to botrytis.

The smoke on Deep Chunk is not for the faint of heart. The flavor is a dark, complex mix of roasted coffee, earthy pine, and raw hash, with just a hint of sour funk on the exhale. It hits with a devastating, heavy-lidded body stone that will instantly put you in the couch for the rest of the night. Good luck finding original seeds from Tom today; most of what you see floating around the forums are preservation runs from old 2000s stock. But anybody who manages to get a true Deep Chunk cut into their room knows they are working with a priceless piece of cannabis history.

Growing Deep Chunk: what to expect

As an indica-leaning plant, expect a modest stretch after the flip (roughly 50–100%) and dense bud structure — which makes late-flower humidity discipline the main risk: keep RH in the 40s once buds fatten to stay ahead of mold. Growers familiar with Afghanistan Indica will recognize much of its behavior. Whatever the listing says, the cut in YOUR tent is the ground truth: log feedings, readings, and photos, and let the trends — not the label — drive decisions.
